Artist in Residence 2024 | Mosaic at Miramar | Miramar, FL

Yanel Hernandez Prieto

Yanel Hernandez Prieto is a versatile visual artist, painter, draftsman, designer, and muralist born in the small town of Florida, Cuba, within the Camagüey region. He began his formal studies in fine arts in 1998, graduating in 2002 with a focus on painting and drawing. With over 22 years of experience, Yanel has carried his artistic dreams from his small studio gallery in Cuba to the United States, where he has become a celebrated member of the Cuban community since his arrival in 2021.

Initially based in Nevada, Yanel contributed to cultural projects before settling in South Florida, then Orlando. During this time, he worked as a scenic artist and muralist painter for Disney and Universal, honing his craft in the thematic industry while pursuing his personal artistic aspirations. His work now reflects a deep connection to Florida—both his home state and his hometown—through decorative projects and his ongoing exploration of art.

Yanel’s artistic journey is defined by constant experimentation and a blend of academic traditions with contemporary styles. His versatility allows him to navigate genres effortlessly, from conceptual art to portraiture, abstraction, and realism. Portraiture has become a central focus of his recent work, emphasizing the symbolic and historical layers within his art.

To date, Yanel has held over 20 personal exhibitions across Cuba, Europe, and Mexico, as well as numerous commissioned works in public spaces and tourist attractions. His contributions extend to more than 80 collective exhibitions worldwide, with his art displayed in galleries, private collections, and major cultural events. Beyond creating, Yanel shares his passion through teaching, offering workshops and courses in painting and drawing, rooted in his belief that art serves as medicine for the soul and a path to a healthy life.

Yanel’s work is rich with symbolism, exploring themes of cultural identity, history, freedom, and personal experience. Despite living far from his homeland, he carries the spirit of both nations in his heart, blending his Cuban roots with his American journey. Through his work, he remains deeply connected to new technologies and trends in contemporary art, ensuring his creations remain both timeless and innovative.

Joining the American Landmark Artists in Residence program marks an exciting new chapter for Yanel, as he continues to leave his artistic mark and inspire the communities he serves. This program is not just another project but a meaningful milestone in his journey as both an artist and a creator.
